“It’s Been A Year!”

Hi everyone,

One year ago yesterday, we began our safer at home plan to keep from contracting the coronavirus that was and has devastated our state, country, and the world. That morning, March 13, 2020, we delivered our guests from Russia to the airport for their trip home, then went to breakfast with a couple of our Friendship Force friends. It was the last time we had a meal inside a restaurant. Little did we know at the time that one year later we would still be feeling the affects of the virus.

It was a year and a week ago when we welcomed the Open World delegation from Russia. They were in Madison to learn more about encouraging more girls and women in Russia to enter STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) occupations. My Traveling Partner and I hosted Julia, one of the delegates in our home. Julia is from St. Petersburg and is a teacher of the English language at a high school. She was quite proficient in English having studied for a time in England. She was a delightful guest and we enjoyed having her stay with us. She’s the one in the red coat in the photo below.

During their stay, the delegation learned about the U. S. and Wisconsin culture. They had meals in homes and attended a potluck. They toured the Wisconsin State Capitol and got acquainted with Bucky Badger at the University of Wisconsin.

Beginning on Monday, they began their learning experiences with visits to the Madison Children’s Museum, the UW Biotechnology Department, toured Madison College, and gave a presentation about their program to the public.

By Wednesday, many of the presenters and locations we scheduled began to cancel programs as the virus became more prevalent. On Thursday, the delegation was notified their program was being cut short. They would begin their trip home on Friday before an embargo on European travel was put in place. The delegates spent Thursday afternoon shopping for gifts to take back to Russia and had a last dinner with their hosts. It was sad to see them leave before their program was complete but the virus was the boss! We made a giant step forward with our new friends and wished them well on their journey.

After the lockdown was put in place, there were a lots of things we couldn’t do for fear of the virus. Things like; traveling, congregating in groups, shaking hands, hugging people, and eating in restaurants. Within short order, we had to cancel plans to travel to New York City with The Eldest and the Son-in-Law and unravel our reservations for our annual trip to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Soon the biennial family reunion and every five-year high school reunion were postponed to 2021. I don’t want to focus on what we couldn’t or didn’t do in the past year but on what we did and what we learned.

A few days after we went into lockdown, I started keeping a “pandemic” journal. I write every few days about things going on, observations on our situation, and trying to figure out my place in this mess that we find ourselves. Here are a few quotes from my journal entries:

Well folks, “It’s been a year!” I’m thankful to you all for reading my blog posts and making comments here or on Facebook. It’s a good motivator even though I’m running low on material! Spring is on it’s way so looking forward to getting out more and maybe back to somewhat normal later this year.

Until next week, happy virtual travels!

Tom
